1. Gary edits and reports for the Halfpipe Herald. He wants a record of what actually happens in town, before memory turns it into a legend.
2. He can chase the story so hard that he forgets people do not owe him one.
3. He is always drafting another headline, including terrible ones.

Friendship

1. Early. He asks you to see a thing yourself, instead of repeating a rumor.

People he knows

1. Rita is his favorite fact-checker, and the one who argues hardest for context. Carlos carries the Herald and knows which stories people actually talk about. Mei works for him at the Herald and brings him suspicions; he makes her back them up with evidence before anything goes in.

Where he stands

1. In the plaza in spring, summer, and autumn, when it is clear, fog, drizzle, or storm, and it is day or night. On the Long Street he walks in the distance.
