Who he is

  1. Santiago is a Chilimanjaro kid. He wants to make something people will still point at years from now.
  2. He can confuse size, and being seen, with mattering.
  3. He carries a ribbon, ready for a little ceremony whenever something gets finished.
  4. He does street art and murals around town, and signs them somewhere you have to look for.

Friendship

  1. Early. He pitches a huge landmark, then cannot stop talking about a small curb change people already use.

  1. You help him try something modest. He is let down by how ordinary it looks, and then he notices people using it.

  1. Small skate pieces start turning up around town. He takes more pride in useful things than in one monument with his name on it.

  1. Bodie likes the civic ambition and keeps shrinking the proposals into pieces the town can approve. Niva feeds the big ideas. Welly will say plainly whether a thing is actually fun to ride.

  1. In the plaza in spring, summer, and autumn, when it is clear, wind, or drizzle, and it is day. At the halfpipe he walks around it.
