Who he is

  1. Jace is a Mosswood kid. He wants to be worthy of carrying the craft forward.
  2. He copies methods that already work, because he is afraid of being the one who does it wrong.
  3. He keeps tiny practice scraps from each joint, sanding pass, or repair he has learned.

Friendship

  1. Early. He shows you a repair almost the way Shiiro would, and he shrugs off the tools he made himself.

  1. An old Mosswood method works badly on newer equipment. He thinks he did it wrong, then he changes the technique.

  1. He shows Shiiro the tools he made, and he starts writing down why a method works. He can carry the craft forward.

People he knows

  1. Shiiro is his mentor, and the pressure is mostly accidental. Welly hands him unfamiliar gear because Jace hates having no procedure. Alma likes that he can restore a thing, and she thinks he can stare so hard at the technique that he misses the story.

Where he stands

  1. In the plaza in spring, autumn, and winter, when it is clear, drizzle, or snow, and it is day. At the halfpipe he skates past.
